Early Life and Education
Born to Catholic parents, Mario Miranda’s artistic talents became apparent early in his life. His mother, upon noticing his penchant for drawing on the walls of their home, provided him with a blank book that he would call his “Diary” until his final days. Miranda attended St. Joseph’s Boys’ High School in Bangalore before pursuing a B.A. in History at St. Xavier’s College in Mumbai. Initially, he studied architecture at his parents’ insistence but soon lost interest in the subject.
Launching a Career in Cartooning
Miranda began his professional journey in an advertising studio, where he worked for four years before transitioning to cartooning full-time. His big break came when The Illustrated Weekly of India published a few of his works, leading to an offer to work at Current magazine. Despite initially rejecting him, the Times of India eventually offered Miranda a position, and his creations, such as Miss Nimbupani and Miss Fonseca, became regular features in publications like Femina, Economic Times, and The Illustrated Weekly of India.
Collaboration and International Success
After spending five years in England, Miranda returned to Mumbai and resumed his position with the Times of India, where he worked alongside renowned cartoonist R.K. Laxman. In 1974, Miranda traveled to the United States, a pivotal moment in his career that allowed him to promote his art and network with other cartoonists. This trip also provided him the opportunity to work with Charles M. Schulz, the legendary creator of the Peanuts comic strip.
Awards and Accolades
Over the course of his illustrious career, Mario Miranda received numerous awards in recognition of his artistic contributions. He was honored with the Padma Shri in 1988 and the Padma Bhushan in 2002. The All India Cartoonists’ Association in Bangalore also presented him with a lifetime achievement award. In 2009, King Juan Carlos of Spain bestowed upon Miranda the highest civilian honor, the “Cross of the Order of Isabel the Catholic.”
